The stories I am hearing when out door knocking are truly heart breaking. How the state can permit this to happen is beyond me…
I met a man named Joseph yesterday who talked with me for a bit- all the while drooling. He told me how he hadn’t slept the past 3 nights because of tooth pain, and the necessity to get up every so often to rinse his mouth with water because it was the only thing that relieved the pain. His mouth was evidently in need of dental work, however, he explained that Medicare disagreed as their coverage did not pay to see a dentist. When I left he was planning to catch 2 different buses to try to make it to Generations & get help…..
I met a college student who eagerly received my petition for the Mansfield resolution while pointing out a scar on one of the knuckles of his right hand. He explained how the surgery cost him $5,000- the deductible on his insurance plan…..
I met a man in subsidized housing who told me that his wife just lost her medical care from the state because she made too much money. It turns out she was injured, and when she began collecting disability the state then considered the $600 a month she was receiving more than enough to provide for herself- and her medical care….
I had little more to offer these everyday people than an ear, and a chance to sign on a line that I tell them will make a difference. I can only hope that the stories behind the many signatures I have gathered find their strength in the tragic proportions of their numbers….
Great change comes from people who are willing to stand up to an injustice, and how hard to do so when under the weight of that injustice…I am humbled and saddened and inspired at once to meet these people who diligently continue with their lives the best way they know how…
To those of you who have the comfort to read this online blog, I hope you honor the struggle of these people, and commit yourself to reversing the tide of sickness, debt & death that is wrought by our health care system.
Some parting thoughts:
“It does not require a majority to prevail. Rather, an irate, tireless, minority, keen to set bush fires in peoples mind’s”- Sam Adams
“The object of government is the welfare of the people. The material progress and prosperity of a nation are desirable chiefly so far as they lead to the moral and material welfare of all citizens”
Teddy Roosevelt
